Black & White Courtyard Garden

This paved garden was created in collaboration with the owner in 2007 by filling in an ageing swimming pool to create an area for relaxing and entertaining, with various sight lines for enjoying the view.

Incorporating a water feature and rusted iron obelisks at each corner with contrasting paving stones delineating pathways through the design.

The black and white planting scheme is particularly dramatic in spring with its display of tulips, and the focus is very much on scented plants throughout the year. These include viburnum burkwoodii in spring, white freesias, jasmine and several rose varieties for summer and acidanthera murielae in the autumn.

The project took 10 weeks from initial construction to planting and involved filling in with 100 tonnes of stone and ballast.
